Bad news for Marvel TV fans. Even with near universal praise from critics, Agent Carter just didn’t reach the ratings it needed to earn a third season. Agent Carter enjoyed an unexpected level of popularity during its first season. The future was looking bright as follow up season was announced. Hayley Atwell even reprised her role as Peggy Carter in the summer blockbuster, “Age of Ultron.”
Unfortunately, the tie in didn’t save Agent Carter’s second season from ending with record low ratings. After the announcement of Atwell’s upcoming role in ABC’s upcoming Conviction series, rumors started circulating that the show’s future was in jeopardy. Then, just yesterday, Tara Butters (Agent Carter’s executive producer) asked fans to tweet their support of the show before its fate was revealed today. It looks like fans will have to settle with Agent Carter concluding with a cliffhanger, because that’s all we’re going to get.
Personally, I feel that Agent Carter just didn’t have the name recognition that it’s competition like Flash, Arrow, and Supergirl boast. Even ABC’s flagship Marvel series, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. has struggled with viewer ratings. That being said, I haven’t given up hope. Perhaps Agent Carter can find a new home on Marvel’s successful Netflix lineup if fan support continues.
With ABC also passing on Marvel’s Most Wanted, it looks like the upcoming Cloak and Dagger series will be Marvel’s only other foray into mainstream television.
