Today I will be writing my commentary on the new video by Skrillex featuring Diplo, CL and GD! I’d make a video reaction but copyright is a bitch on YouTube… Let’s get started!

This video is very typical to a k-pop rapper style video. It was wacky compared to most videos, but at least it wasn’t overly sexualized. Apparently it got so much hate it was privated on YouTube so you can only view it via link, which I’ll give you in the embedded. i think the song itself is fun, it isn’t the most creative song since the beat and EDM are cycled through the song. Not to mention the video seems a bit over the top… But nothing to spew hate about! I’ll explain the video in the next paragraph then express my opinion!

So the video starts with this crazy guy in black body paint and horns, he’s kind of creepy looking. Then GD walks around in his usual fashion, which other people call him a “black wanna be” but I say it’s just GD GD baby baby… He wears braids and glasses with a kooky blue lense tint and a robe with jeans. Then the scene changes to him in another typical GD outfit with a rainbow-ish snapback worn backwards, a bandana halfway down his face and a black and white dirty vibe shirt. There’s dancers in similar clothing behind him but in much brighter colors, and they’re multi-racial so don’t pull that racist BS. He starts rapping in the previous outfit with an effect over his voice and switches to the second outfit. When CL’s part comes in “Bitch I’m on that dirty vibe” it just shows dirty vibe as a gold grill in her teeth. Then the dirty vibe promotion picture with the red album shows and there’s light effects on it to where it’s kind of trippy since there’s lots of colors. Then you see the horn black paint guy dance (somewhat) and you see GD chilling with the homies, then the guy dances some more and CL comes in after. She goes between two looks, black pigtails with a black and white crop top with sleeves and skirt, and a crazy standing up hairstyle in black clothes. She raps going back and forth between outfits with the trippy lighting. Then after CL says she’s on that dirty vibe, she has a rap battle with GD. GD sits on an orange convertible and starts the battle in his black top and jeans and hat, and CL responds back in an outfit with jeans, a white top and a nerf gun. They go back and forth for a bit until you see GD with his “homies” and kids of different races, and raps really fast which makes him clearly win the rap battle. Then we later see the black horn body paint guy and CL dances a little, and it goes back between CL and GD until the song fades out.

So if you couldn’t watch the video at least you have an idea. This is a very typical video, especially for GD. In fact it really just screams a GD video; specifically a “One of a kind” GD style video. Remember his video for “One of a kind”? It was quite ridiculous; he even had crazy hair like in this video. He also had what seemed like a group of “homies” and muti-racial kids in it. There was also black face in it (ie: the horn guy) like in GD’s video for Coup D’état. So it’s pretty obvious that GD had a lot of say in the music video, and the song in general. Not that a repeat of his One Of a kind video is bad by any means, he clearly has a style that is his own and you can point it out. There wasn’t as much CL in the video as I thought which slightly disappointed me. I thought there’d be some interaction between the two besides the rap battle, because I ship SkyDragon SO HARD! I also think they kind of made her look like an Asian stereotype just a little bit, might have been the pigtails that did it though. It reminded me of L.A.M.B and Hollerback girl by Gen Stefani, remember all the hate she got for being “racist”? I think it’s just a style thing and when you try to make a video for people of another culture (that you aren’t) sometimes things just look stereotypical (ie: Scooter Braun and Diplo and Skrillex are white). So despite the fact that this video is oddly similar to GD’s one of kind, and the lack of a slightly stereotypical CL it was a good video none the less, just a bit wacky!

Now as for the song itself… the song came out as a single featuring CL and GD about 9 months ago. It is on Skrillex’s album “Recess”. It’s on his channel but there’s no video, just a logo. The song has a really cool beat and the use of a beat box with the filter over it is neat. I think they just used the same beat over and over which can get tiresome. There’s no meter shift, slow-down or key change to distract the listener of the same beat (except for the rap battle) so that’s a bit of a let down. I just think it’s a bit over the top, with the references of Lamborghinis and the cursing (seeing how G-Dragon is usually pretty PG, as is CL) but it’s more humorous than anything else. It’s nice to see k-pop artists collaborate with artists from other places, especially if there’s more English in it (kongrish makes a good k-pop song).

Now before I close this, I am going to address the haters of the song. There are many types of haters for this song: I hate Skrillex, I hate Diplo, I hate C:, I hate GD, I hate when k-pop people leave their groups, why’s k-pop got to sound American, ect…  STOP HATING PLEASE, FOR GODS SAKE! If you don’t like one of the artists or more, don’t like the genre, or if people are going outside the box… WHY ARE YOU WATCHING IT THEN?! If you really hated it, would you spend the time and effort to search up the song and write some thoughtful hate comment? Don’t think so… Deep down you must like it, you’re probably just in denial so get over it okay? The video has been privated because people just spew hate. There are plenty of comments from haters still continuing so they’re getting links somehow. Haters to the left, please! Also, please stop calling CL the Korean Nicki Minaj… IT’S REALLY ANNOYING!

Anyway, thanks for reading!

And remember, no hickies!

xoxo, Elise
