Freeform, formerly known as ABC Family, has ordered a full season of popular marvel duo Cloak and Dagger! This is a major step for Marvel’s television line up. Up to now, Freeform’s sister network ABC has found mixed success with “Agents of SHIELD” and “Agent Carter”. Even with two additional shows on the way, one following Mockingbird, no characters quite meet the popularity of Cloak and Dagger. The series will be co-produced by Marvel Television and ABC Signature Studios. It’s described as a superhero love story aimed at young adults from ages 14-34.
Here’s the series description!
“The live-action interracial romance follows the duo, two teenagers from very different backgrounds, who find themselves burdened and awakened to newly acquired superpowers while falling in love — Tandy can emit light daggers and Tyrone has the ability to engulf others in darkness. They quickly learn they are better together than apart, but their feelings for each other make their already complicated world even more challenging.”
Cloak and Dagger have been mainstays in the Marvel Universe ever since their initial debut in Spectacular Spider-Man #64 back in 1982. Since then, they have had many follow up appearances in Spider-Man, X-Men, and even their own solo titles. Ordering a full season is a big deal for any TV show, but Freeform is incredibly confident to do so when they don’t even have a writer. That being said, knowing you’re writing for a full season alleviates much of the pacing issues broadcasted shows face vs the Netflix model.
How do you feel about Cloak and Dagger being aimed at a younger audience? Personally, I’m incredibly excited to see Disney utilized more well known heroes in their broadcast networks and hope to see the trend continue. Who knows, maybe a certain web-slinger will repeat history on the small screen.
