Blizzard just released its latest animated short for Overwatch titled “The Last Bastion” at Gamescom 2016. The new cinematic focuses on Bastion, a robot designed for peace, but inevitably used for war during the Omic Crisis (the rebellion of machines against their human creators…..so the Matrix).
After the war this particular Bastion unit was forgotten over time and left to rust, exposed to the elements he became riddled with overgrown vines and befriended creatures of the forest. Bastion activated some time later and began exploring its new world and discovered the planet was ravaged by war once again.
Also revealed at Gamescom 2016 was the new Overwatch map Eichenwalde, which ties into Bastion’s story as it was “one of the most famous battles during the Omnic Crisis, it was here that the leader of the Crusaders, Balderich von Adler, and a handful of his best soldiers made a last stand against an advancing automaton army. Outnumbered and outgunned, they were ultimately slain during the resulting combat. However, thanks to their valiant efforts, the German military was able to push back the omnic offensive and win the fight.”
Blizzard needs to stop playing around and make full length animated movies, these cinematics rival Disney PIXAR films!
