Scarlett Johansson is featured in the Ghost in the Shell teaser trailer as Major Motoko Kusanagi along with the infamous and incredible actor Takeshi Kitano as Chief Daisuke Aramaki. The controversy surrounding this film seems to be amplifying as fans of this classic movie are torn between their hate for Scar Jo as a non-asian interpretation of the main character, and fans who seem to be okay with her being this non-gender non-ethnicity defined “full-body prosthesis augmented-cybernetic human”. In the trailer we see a few images that strung together as if to say “look how cool all of this Asian imagery is, and oh look Scar Jo!” The monks plugged into a network hub, a geisha walking down a hallway, Takeshi Kitano reloading a gun, and what we assume to be a model asking the Major “what are you”.
My pick for the major would be Rinko Kikuchi from Pacific Rim as she gave a great performance with what she was given in Pacifim Rim and people wanted to see more. Rinko would also meld better into the role as the Major because she has showcased the physical fortitude to take on the martial arts combat seen in Ghost in the Shell with a finesse few professional actors can authentically portray without projecting a falsehood of pre-choregraphed moves.
In the film, policewoman “The Major” (Scarlett Johansson), and her task force Section 9 thwart cyber criminals and hackers. Now, they must face a new enemy who will stop at nothing to sabotage Hanka Robotic’s Artificial Intelligence technology.
