On Wednesday June 21st Sega announced a new mobile gaming campaign called Sega Forever, an initiative set to bring most if not all of Sega’s gaming catalog to iOS and Android. Players will have the chance to play games from all of Sega’s console generations such as Master System, Genesis, Game Gear, Saturn and Dreamcast. Games would have to be downloaded as individual apps and are free to play.
Games are paid for by advertisements in the app with an option for an in app purchase of $1.99 to remove them. If you are wondering about advertisements appearing in the middle of game play don’t worry, Sega’s chief marketing officer Mike Evans said this will not be an issue.
With the back catalog Sega has available, the publisher is confident it will be able to continue bringing more classics to mobile for years to come. There are 15 classic Sega titles already available through the App Store that will also be brought into the Forever fold.
It’s a very easy conversion to take those games to free, we’re just bolting in the advertising support model and a single in-app purchase that can disable those ads.
The games were never designed for ads or in-app purchases, which is why we’ve maintained this faithful emulation experience. We’ve spent a lot of time looking at the analytics from the soft launch in the Philippines to understand how we can get this model to be the best for the game experience itself whilst balancing the commercial needs we have.”
Upgrades to Sega’s games include Messages sticker packs, leader boards, achievements, cloud saves, touch screen controls, Bluetooth controller support, and an offline play option. Sega will also hold online user polls to see which games players would like to play next on mobile.
The first five games are available now for download and they include, Sonic The Hedgehog, Comix Zone, Phantasy Star II, and the last two being my personal favorites, Kid Chameleon and Altered Beast.
Sega plans to release another two to three games per month on iOS and Android so make sure to keep an eye out for your favorite title.
