Hello everyone and welcome to the breakdown of the behind the scenes look of The Last Jedi. In recent years Lucas Films/Disney has been following a pattern of showing a teaser trailer first, then releasing a behind the scenes video showcasing everything behind the scenes. Usually the behind the scenes videos don’t show much, but they do however bring up many questions and theories.

First question I have is, who are Daisey Ridley and Adam Driver fighting against? We see in the video both actors working on choreography but interestingly enough Adam Driver (Kylo Ren) is facing off against two opponents with his Lightsaber and blocking attacks. Other than the Z6 Riot Control Baton,(which we saw effectively used in Episode 7 against Fin) and a Force Pike, (which we saw the Red Guard of Galactic Emperor Palpatine carry in Episode 6) not many weapons can withstand a blow from a Lightsaber. My theory is, Driver is practicing a choreographed fight against Luke and Rey. It makes the most sense considering it’s two against one however take a look at how the stuntmen are holding their weapons. They are holding them like staffs so it begs the question who is Kylo Ren fighting.

With Rey we have the same question. Judging by how the stunt men are holding their weapons I can’t fully say if they are holding the Z6 or not. We still see Rey using the Lightsaber to block so it does tell us the weapons can withstand Lightsaber blows. Another theory could be that they are using Electrostaffs that were once wielded by General Grievous’s bodyguards the IG-100 MagnaGuard or that we will finally see Long-Handle Lightsabers on film.

Electrostaffs or Lightsaber staffs, you be the judge.

Next question, is that Darth Vader’s cape? A few months ago, rumors hit the internet about Kylo Ren getting a costume change and possibly wearing Darth Vader’s cape. The rumors were more or less confirmed back in May during a Vanity Fair cover story about The Last Jedi which shows Adam Driver dawning the new cape. Now this could all be a logical costume change because of the duel between Rey and Kylo at the end of Episode VII in which his robes were damaged and cut. But if we consider how much of a fan boy Kylo Ren is for Vader, then he very well could be wearing Vader’s Cape.

One thing I would like to point out. The hood Kylo Ren wore with the tattered fabric in episode VII belongs to his old Jedi robes that he wore while training with Luke. His “tunic” is very reminiscent to a Templar Knight of Europe so I’m wondering if this is a look the new generation of Jedi had, or if this is the look of the Knights of Ren. If the tunic design does belong to the new generation of Jedi, then wearing Vader’s cape makes sense. It’s a way of letting go of his past life and embracing a new, much darker one.

The Storm Troopers seem to have a new weapon of sorts. It’s hard to say what it could be but judging by the figure kneeling in the lower right hand corner, it could be used for arrest and confinement. It seems a bit overkill for humans so maybe its used to confine Wookies, a certain Wookie to be exact.

Next we see John Boyega (Fin) and Kelly Marie Tran (Rose Tico) wearing First Order Officer uniforms. This could be a mission where they are infiltrating a First Order facility or escaping a First Order attack. Rose Tico is part of The Resistance and is a maintenance worker. That’s really all we know so far. Judging by how much of her character is under wraps we can guess she will be very important to the story.

Next image we have Laura Dern as Vice Admiral Amilyn Holdo. Not much is known about Holdo as of yet but we do know she is an Admiral for the Resistance. The images we have seen of her so far shows that she is very glamorous and ritzy. Her purple colored hair, although odd for humans in the Star Wars movie canon, does have a purpose. In the Vanity Fair article Lucasfilm Story Group creative executive Pablo Hidalgo confirms her hair has something to do with her background. The first culture in the Star Wars lore that comes to mind are the Mandalorians. In the Clone Wars series the Mandalorians were very ornate with their outfits and culture. Sabine Wren is very artistic and expressive in the Rebels series and she also has purple hair.

From what I researched, there isn’t a Mandalorian clan named Clan Holdo so it’s very possible she isn’t Mandalorian at all. Amilyn Holdo could be a false name she is using to move up in the ranks of what ever political party that supports The First Order. For all we know, Amilyn Holdo could be Sabine Wren. I may be completely wrong on this but it’s worth mentioning. In the image below we do see Amilyn Holdo talking to a figure that could be General Leia Organa.

This last image is simple and straight to the point but I love it. it’s our first live action shot of Benicio Del Toro as the mysterious character only know for now as “DJ”. Lots of speculation all over the web of who this character could be, some going as far as saying he is Rey’s father. In the article for Vanity Fair it’s said that he is a shifty character with unknown allegiances. A very reminiscent description of one Lando Calrissian. We could see the same story play out where “DJ” is playing both sides until the very end. The image tells us he could be on a ship talking to maybe Fin. You can see the top of BB-8’s head at the bottom and what could be Fin’s hand pointing to him.

I do want to point out that “DJ” may be a smuggler much like the late Han Solo. In the Vanity Fair photo we see “DJ” sitting on what could be shipping containers in the cargo hold of a ship. The coat he is wearing looks very similar to unused concept art for Han Solo in The Force Awakens.

Han Solo could have been his mentor, a partner at some point, or smugglers that screwed each other over. Rian Johnson does refer to him as “DJ” and said the nickname will prove some sort of significance. Many forums have suggested DJ could stand for Dark Jedi. It could stand for Darth…something.

But’s that’s all about what I got for theories ladies and gentlemen. Please let me know if I missed anything in the comments below or let me know what theories you guys may have.
