News has been surfacing that the 1991 cult classic (and personal childhood favorite) film The Rocketeer will be getting a sequel/reboot, and it would appear to be taking a page out of recent Iron Man comic books. While still in the very early stages of development, it is being reported that the film will take place about six years after the original film and will have a black female don the famous jetpack and helmet to find an MIA Cliff Secord.
For those of you who are unfamiliar with the original Rocketeer film (and shame on you for that) it was directed by Joe Johnston (who also directed Captain America: The First Avenger) and starred Billy Campbell, Jennifer Connelly, Alan Arkin and Timothy Dalton. The Rocketeer centers around a stunt pilot who comes into the possession of a top secret jetpack created by an American aviator that could allow the Nazis to win the war should it fall into their hands. Action, adventure, Nazi killing, spies and more await you in the original movie, so I recommend picking it up wherever you can. What is little known is that the original movie was based off of an 80s comic created by Dave Stevens. The comic property has a steady release cycle and has been published by Dark Horse Comics and IDW Publishing.
Here’s the theme song for you to fall in love with!
No word yet on any sort of release time frame, as the movie has only signed on a producer and two writers. If you’re unsure whether to be happy or suspicious about this requel (what I’m calling this Reboot/Sequel hybrid) nobody would blame you, but hopefully Billy Campbell will don the helm again!
