“Deadpool” continues to take the box office by storm, and it looks like ripples of it’s success will continue for some time. In a pamphlet given out by Fox at Hasbro’s 2016 Toy Fair expo this past weekend, it’s been revealed that “The Wolverine III” is anticipated to have an R rating. Why is this a big deal you ask? Fox’s X-Men films, and superhero movies as a whole, have made a point of maintaining a PG-13 rating to maximize revenue. However! With the undeniable success of the R rated “Deadpool,” beating out assumed box office heavy hitters like “Kung Fu Panda 3” and “Zoolander 2,” an R rating no longer sounds like such a risk.
Some claim that this announcement is too close to “Deadpool’s” launch to be related to the film. I’m not convinced. The fact that this movie even got green lit shows a shift in perception that can only mean more variety for the superhero genre as a whole. If not its reception, then it’s production and pre-screenings may have had a hand in this decision.
Though “Deadpool” isn’t a perfect film, (more on that in tomorrow’s podcast) it was more than an R rating that has us fans cheering over it’s success. From tone to costume design, “Deadpool” has proven that new levels of faithfulness to the comic book source material can indeed mean success. What else could “Deadpool” be a precursor for? Let us know what you predict in the comments!
“The Wolverine III” stars Hugh Jackman and hits theaters March 3, 2017.
